Smithy 03:58
Smithy Oh the son of Will and Cathy, in Brisbane Charles was born They left our shores for BC, but they weren’t there for long This before the myth, that became Kingsford-Smith Ooh Smithy you were born to fly Ooh Smithy you were born to fly Yeah the Great War was calling, where toes were his loss For his gallantry they gave him, the military cross From Lady Luck he was kissed, and he became a fascist Lead break Ooh smithy you were born to fly Ooh smithy you were born to fly Flew across the Trans-Pacific, for which he was the first And despite the adoration, It hadn’t quenched his thirst And although - nothing he feared, in the Southern Cross he disappeared Ooh smithy you were born to fly Ooh smithy you were born to fly Uncle Tom was a little boy, of you (he) could not get enough He asked you for an autograph, you told him to f*ck off

Goodbye 04:52
Her head is to the side To sleep begins to slide He watches her From the hallway The memories are vast He’s thinking of the past As teens they wrote You and I always The erosion was creeping Couldn’t see the forest for the trees He’s recalling a time When they were in their prime Evokes a taste, Smell and colour A passion not pursued Some turbulence ensued Didn’t have much, but had each other Looking back it seems so simple Appearing hard it really came with ease In the good night don’t go gentle Ahhh I fell for the first time in my life t’was the last time And I lie, down by your side Close my eyes What rises is the cream To sleep perchance to dream He turns and walks Down the hallway Hello eternity Goodby humanity Remembering You and I always And I pray I have to say Were you happy?

Max was lying on his bed when the mail arrived he stopped what he was reading A letter from Ethel whose brother had died Ern Malley’s poems on inside, it went on: Angry Penguins and Ern Malley Hoax Modernists meet the old guard blokes Ern had died at a young age But not before he’d put his pen to paper Born in Mersey, he moved to Melbourne his natural gift was with the writing caper Max was so enthralled with the work that he decided to publish in the next edition He had no idea that he was being set up by conservatives for derision Angry Penguins and Ern Malley Hoax Modernists meet old guard blokes The response was not expected Had the poems been confected? Controversy ensued for many weeks Pushed mainly by the mainstream Finally the Daily Mail Revealed the whole sordid tale Max the butt of many jokes The victim of a cruel hoax Max recovered, a successful career The hoaxers too wrote for years 75 years later they’ve all long gone But the poems of Ern Malley forever live on Angry Penguins and Ern Malley Hoax Modernists meet old guard blokes

Time flies When you blink an eye I’m here And I didn’t try Happy like a dog Discarded God But wait there’s more I can’t be sure It comes with strings And assorted things This wasn’t fun So I go back to option one Think I got this now I don’t know how May have missed the bus The whole things suss Training wheels are off Not using hands I open my eyes and the time has flown again Chorus I’ve finally arrived and I can see I just figured out what I want to be Asleep at the wheel I’m testing me Time has caught me again pants down on knees Middle 8 I’m on the things that matter Stop listening to the chatter Focus on crossing the line No longer incandescent I’m living in the present Doing that with which I’m inclined Are you still here I thought you’d gone I’ve figured it out But it took so long I’ve finally arrived and I can see I just figured out what I want to be Asleep at the wheel I’m testing me Time has caught me again pants down on knees

Hitchhiking 03:42
The dawn went forever and the traffic had gone, the cars ran on leaded and no sign of a phone, sign said for four days that nobody had come, old-enough to know better but I wanted my mum, burning sleepers to keep extremities warm, two of us huddled in bag made for one, a car appeared alone in the distant sun, packed to the brim, towing another one, slowed down but it drove on menacing by, necks craned to look but they would-n’t have hurt a fly, come on, we got a ride catch, the temperatures droppin you know Hitch hiken' to Katherine I don’t remember when it all began, Was near a town called Palmerston, Sticking out a finger on the open road, heavy rain had meant the banks had overflowed, The lifts came quickly down to Adelaide river, just in time for little bit of dinner, We slept in shifts many hours it took, stopping off for water in Nit-mil-uk, Mystical land of blue and red, Totally enthralled we were mystified, We made Mataranka without a single goddam wanker, Stuart highway was a single lane you know , Oh come on Who will drive me home Gimme a sign here on Gimme some oh yeah

about

Pinkerton Pendlebury is a musical partnership spanning some more than five decades of live and studio experience, and something of a mutual admiration society between two Melbourne figures who are known as musician's musicians. Andrew Pendlebury is best known for his work with seminal Stephen Cummings-fronted '70s/80s Melbourne band The Sports and for a number of acclaimed solo records - including an ARIA Award winner - in the '80s; Steve Pinkerton came to prominence in the 2000's with The Anyones who had both US and Aussie record deals, and these days plays drums for Dallas Crane and sings and plays guitar in The Ronson Hangup.

Following the album's release, Andrew and Steve, together with bass player Steve Hadley (Paul Kelly, Tex Perkins & The Rubber Band, Black Sorrows, Vince Jones), guitarist Jason Kain (Jackson Code, Louis Tillet's Wet Taxis) will take Pinkerton Pendlebury to the stage.

Andrew Pendlebury and Steve Pinkerton first met when Steve was enlisted to play drums for The Sports last run of shows back in 2017, before the sad passing of Andrew's guitar playing partner in the band, Martin Armiger. Pinkers and Pendles started to jam at Steve’s place and began writing together just prior to the Covid lockdowns. Recording took place, when it was possible, at Steve's studio - Steve recorded, mixed and produced the album. Steve sung and played drums, Steve Hadley was recruited on bass and Steve's Ronson Hangup partner Ashley Naylor also contributed. The songs are rooted in melody and driven by Andrew’s amazing guitar technique and Steve’s mellifluous vocal.

Pinkerton Pendlebury's music is a natural blend of the two principal's musical and artistic inclinations and outlooks. Andrew was a classically trained child violinist who, inspired by Django Reinhardt and Jimi Hendrix, taught himself guitar and began in bands in the early-to-mid '70s. His lexicon includes country, jazz, a host of different ethnic folk styles and of course '60s and '70s rock. Steve also loves '60s and 70s rock but is 20-odd years younger and approaches it from a more recent perspective. Both come from artistic and musical families. Andrew's parents were prominent in visual arts in mid-20th century Melbourne - Andrew also paints and has exhibited - and his older sister is an actress. Steve's father was a prominent scientist, and his mother received a piano scholarship to the Sydney conservatorium at the age of 14 (her career was sadly thwarted by schizophrenia); Together Pinkerton Pendlebury have a broad musical outlook and a wide and deep well of experience to draw on.

Pinkerton Pendlebury's debut album is a strong song-orientated collection hung on a startling musicality. Both timeless and contemporary, it sounds very much of the moment, yet echoes over half a century of rock and pop. Lyrically, it reveals Steve's strong interest in history - the first couple of songs cover Australia's most famous fascist-sympathising aviator ("Smithy"; also the first single) and the 1930's murder of a young writer and artist model who, Steve later discovered, was associated with an Arts Society that Andrew's father later presided over. A subsequent track looks at a Modernist Australian poet from the 1940’s, and other songs touch on science, mental health and politics. Pinkerton Pendlebury play pop music for adults, and Pinkerton Pendlebury is intelligent and engaging and a constant source of surprise and delight.
